Frank Meronk, Jr., M.D. A True Eyelid Specialist
Blepharoplasty, or cosmetic eye surgery, was described more than a half century ago and then practiced with only minor refinements for over thirty years. Two decades ago, a bold advance initiated evolution in surgical technique while simultaneously introducing its own set of drawbacls that have just recently begun to be addressed.
Many cosmetic surgeons still employ "classic" eyelid lift procedures based upon dated concepts. While such operations may yield a noticeable change, they often leave the eyelids looking hollowed, harsh, and unnatural. By trading one eyelid deformity for another, they may even accelerate the changes for which eyelid surgery was first sought.
The day when blepharoplasty entailed no more than the removal of eyelid skin and fat is gone, as is the need to settle for its former lower standard of aesthetic excellence. Tissues can now be contoured, resuspended, repositioned, resurfaced, grafted, and augmented to achieve a more attractive, youthful, and safer long-term result.
